Psalm 107 reimagined

  1. Give credit to the Lord for he / she is kind-hearted.  His / her love is dependable and inexhaustible.
  2. The Lord has liberated your whole family, hasn’t he / she?  Then make it clear.  Tell those around you that he / she has freed all of you from your oppression.
  3. You are diverse individuals, coming from different places and backgrounds, with different viewpoints and histories, yet he / she has turned you into a single community.
  1. Some of you were refugees, having no homes and no idea of where to go.
  2. You were starving and dying of thirst.
  3. You begged the Lord to help you in your hardships and he / she delivered you from your destitution.
  4. He / she brought you to this place of safety and gave you a new home and life.
  5. Remember the Lord’s inexhaustible love for you and cherish him / her in return.  Pay tribute to him / her for all the amazing miracles he / she has done for you.
  6. He / she has quenched your thirst and has given you all that you need.
  1. Some of you were in dark and lonely places and some were locked up.
  2. You all felt far from your God, believing you had let him / her down and had ignored the advice of the Greatest of all Time.
  3. It seemed as though he / she was punishing you, piling one disaster on you after another and you had no-one to turn to.
  4. Out of sheer desperation you cried, “Lord, please rescue me.”  He / she broke in and turned things around.
  5. In the darkest place, you felt the warmth of his / her presence and doors that had been locked, began to open.
  6. Remember the Lord’s inexhaustible love for you and cherish him / her in return.  Pay tribute to him / her for all the amazing miracles he/ she has done for you.
  7. He / she forced locked doors to open and broke apart the bonds which held you.
  1. Some of you lived lives of which you are now ashamed.  Looking back, you felt that you got your just deserts.
  2. Your health suffered, and you could not afford to eat.  It looked like it could only end one way.
  3. In your despair, you cried out, “Lord, do something” and he / she picked you up.
  4. He / she spoke to you gently and healed your body and mind.  You regained your strength and death receded.
  5. Remember the Lord’s inexhaustible love for you and cherish him / her in return.  Pay tribute to him / her for all the amazing miracles he / she has done for you.
  6. Devote yourself to remembering all that you have to be grateful for and enjoy singing to him / her in love.
  1. Some of you were focussed on your working life at the exclusion of all else, doing what needed to be done, when it needed to be done, wherever it needed to be done.
  2. You saw how the world can work – at one moment everything was going well, the next it felt like all the Lord’s creative power was unleashed in a storm.
  3. You were frightened because forces beyond your control threatened your livelihood and reputation.
  4. Businesses that were once growing and invincible, suddenly came crashing down and the employees recoiled in alarm.
  5. Everything you had worked for seemed doomed and you didn’t know which way to turn.
  6. “Lord, show me what to do”, you pleaded in confusion and he / she showed you a way forward.
  7. The confusion of thoughts in your head calmed and your restless emotions quietened.
  8. His / her presence brought a sense of peace and you let him / her build a new life for you.
  9. Remember the Lord’s inexhaustible love for you and cherish him / her in return.  Pay tribute to him / her for all the amazing miracles he / she has done for you.
  10. Tell the story of his / her compassion to you, to his / her followers and to all the leaders you meet.
  1. Flooding rivers can become dry gorges and well-irrigated plains can suddenly dry up, when he / she decides.
  2. Fertile lands can become a wasteland where nothing grows because he / she makes a stand against the wrongdoings and atrocities of the inhabitants.
  3. On the other hand, dry deserts can flourish with new oases and arid wastelands can become irrigated by the appearance of many springs, when he / she acts.
  4. Starving refugees can make this area their home and develop their communities.
  5. They can create their own farms, start their own businesses and begin to flourish.
  6. With his /her presence and backing, their families will grow, and their businesses will prosper.
  1. Later, if they begin to decline and face ruin suffering repression, hardship and distress,
  2. He / she will hold their leaders to account and strip them of their power.
  3. He / she will liberate the oppressed from their struggles and help them to flourish again.
  4. His / her followers will understand these events and celebrate, while the perverse will be struck dumb.
  5. Let these insights develop your common sense and may you look at the way the Lord works and understand his / her inexhaustible and never-ending love.
