Psalm 31 reimagined

A psalm which David gave to the Choir Director to arrange.

  1. I come to you for support, Lord – may I never be humiliated.  Rescue me, for you always do what is just.
  2. Please pay attention to my pleas – be quick to help me.  Be a strong defence to protect me from the onslaught.
  3. You are my strong defence and protection.  For the sake of your reputation, be my bodyguard.
  4. I am backed into a corner by those who would oppose me, and it is only you that I can rely on for safety.
  5. I commit my whole self to your cause.  Deliver me, for you are my Lord and my God, the only one on whom I can rely.
  1. I dislike those who commit themselves to shallow ideas and possessions.  I rely on the Lord.
  2. Your never-ending love brings me pleasure and delight, for I know that you understand my challenges and watch over my wellbeing.
  3. You have rescued me from the waves of criticism and failure, lifting me up and putting me on solid ground.
  1. I am in anguish, Lord, and need your compassion.  I can’t stop crying, I can’t sleep, I can’t eat – I feel as though I am shrivelling up inside.
  2. The grief has drained my health and I have nothing else to live for.  My faults are front and centre, and I feel as though my very self is decaying.
  3. I disgust my opponents and am loathed by my colleagues.  Even my partners keep their distance, avoiding me at all costs.
  4. It is as though I am no longer there or am like a discarded garment which has seen its day.
  5. I know what is being said about me and I know that my adversaries are plotting my final demise.
  1. But Lord, all my hope is in you.  You are my Creator.
  2. Whatever happens from now on depends on you.  Save me from those whose sole aim is to take me down.
  3. May your sympathy and kindness envelope me, and your inexhaustible love liberate me.
  4. I do not want to be humiliated, Lord, I am pleading for your support.  May the depraved be shamed.   Let them slip away unnoticed.
  5. Silence their lies – their proud and arrogant hearts which direct allegations at your family.
  1. You have saved up vast reservoirs of kindness for those who love you.  You pour your compassion on all who plead for your security.  Everyone can see how generous you are.
  2. You guard them closely from those who plot against them and who spread hurtful recriminations.
  1. I will adore the Lord for he / she has amazed me with his / her boundless love.  He / she rescued me when my life was under threat.
  2. I was in a frenzy, unable to reach you but you heard my shouts for rescue, and you held out your hand to deliver me.
  3. If you follow the Lord, think the world of him / her.  He / she is a loving father / mother to his / her devoted family but those who are conceited are left to the consequences of their actions.
  4. With determination and confidence, put all your hope in the Lord.
